Every week we dig through the community to find the best free and near-free resources for miniature painters and D&D players. This week’s drop has something for everyone — a monster free STL library that keeps on giving, and a free GW mini that’s running out fast.
Once they’re printed, our beginner’s guide covers everything you need to paint them, and our Paints & Primers section has the gear reviews.
1. Cults3D: Free Printable Miniature STLs for D&D
What it is: Cults3D hosts over 2,900 free printable miniature STLs and terrain models for D&D from independent designers. We’re talking adventurers, monsters, dungeon furniture, scatter terrain, bases — the full toolkit for building out a campaign’s worth of printable minis without spending a penny.
Why it’s worth your time: The quality range is wide, but the top-rated models on Cults3D are genuinely excellent — detailed enough to paint properly, scaled correctly for 28mm gameplay, and organised well enough that you can search by monster type, character class, or setting. Owlbears, beholders, mindflayers, tavern furniture, dungeon doors — it’s all there.
The free section is a permanent part of the site, not a time-limited promotion, so there’s no rush — but it’s worth bookmarking if you have a printer or are thinking about getting one. New free models are added regularly by designers who use the platform to build visibility for their paid work.
Find it: Head to cults3d.com and filter by Free under the D&D or Tabletop category.
Best for: Anyone with a 3D printer looking to build out a D&D miniature collection without buying individual models.
2. Free Hernkyn Yaegir Mini — GW Stores (While Stocks Last)
What it is: Games Workshop’s May 2026 Miniature of the Month is a Hernkyn Yaegir — a Leagues of Votann infantry model from Warhammer 40,000. It’s a free in-store pickup, one per person, while stock lasts. The model has been available since May 2nd.
Why it’s worth grabbing: Even if you don’t play 40K, the Hernkyn Yaegir is a genuinely interesting model to paint. It’s a rugged space-dwarf prospector with a long coat, layered armour, and exposed skin — which means you get leather, metal, cloth, and flesh all on one model. That’s a lot of painting variety for free, and it’s a solid practice piece for anyone working on technique.
The catch: It’s end of May and stock at individual stores will vary. GW runs these monthly and doesn’t guarantee supply — some stores will be out. Call ahead or ask in-store before making a special trip. In Australia, Europe, New Zealand and the UK, you may be asked to assemble the model in-store.
How to claim it: Walk into your local Warhammer store and ask staff. There’s no minimum spend required for the free mini — just ask.
Best for: Anyone who wants a free, well-detailed miniature to paint and doesn’t mind it being sci-fi rather than fantasy.
That’s this week’s Loot Drop. We find these every week — free tools, tutorials, STLs and resources worth knowing about. See all Loot Drops here.
